Simulation Games at the University of Glamorgan

Case Study Simulation Game - December 2005

The purpose of these web pages will be to showcase ongoing work being developed by the University of Glamorgan's e-Learning Services Team in the area of Simulation Games. I will be updating these pages a few times a year as new projects get underway but the main purpose is to show some examples to a community of educators, developers and practitioners interested in developing educational Simulation Games.

This project was developed by members of the e-Learning Service Team and the Business School of the University of Glamorgan between Feb and September 2005 and was made possible by a grant from the Learning and Teaching Office of the University of Glamorgan.

The simulation game was used within a core module called Enterprise Planning within the Business School of the University of Glamorgan by second year students studying a variety of awards. The students were studying the characteristics of large and small organisations and after a lecture on this theme, were asked to explore the simulation game during the following week and note the characteristics of the two organisations. The tutor used this experience for a focused debrief/discussion in the tutorial the following week around the dynamics within organisations. Our evaluation from the students was very positive and is currently being written up.

This is our first attempt at creating a simulation game for learning and was made in Flash using an object-oriented approach. As a result we now have a robust engine for making similar learning applications which we hope to do during Spring '06.
